Paris International Festival of Psychedelic Music

(Paris - FRANCE)

July 4-6, 2014

The first edition of the Paris International Festival of Psychedelic Music (PIFPM) will be held on the 4th, 5th and 6th of July 2014. Over the span of a week-end, Psych-Rock and its numerous sub-genres, from vintage to experimental electronic music, will be celebrated at La Machine du Moulin Rouge first and then at the Batofar. The famous parisian venue in Pigalle will host for two consecutives days concerts and festivities featuring live sessions and DJ sets from dusk to dawn – 6pm-6am. A special event, free and open to everyone, will take place on Sunday at La Plage du Batofar from 4pm to 11pm.

Overall, more than seventeen bands and ten DJs will keep relieving each other for three full days, honoring a sound and a culture becoming more and more broadly appreciated and recognised. The ever-growing richness of this musical genre resulted in the appearance of a legitimate alternative within the Rock culture of the new millenia ; but despite that fact, it is today often under-represented.

Thus, following a natural attention to discovery and bearing a sharing spirit in mind, three music enthusiasts teamed up with La Machine team who helped them breathe life into their brainchild, the PIFPM. Driven by a strong desire to make it a global event where the whole of this genre would be represented, the PIFPM will also promote visual and cinematographic arts born from those alternative culture influences in an off-festival.

Austin and Liverpool had it before. Paris now has it too. The joy of being the proud host of a festival of its own filled with authentic artists representing it, becoming a necessary stop on the journey to Psychedelic music. For more information and further enjoyment, book your week-end and see you in July.

Psychedelia. It was the psychiatrist Humphry Osmond who first defined the term, derived from ancient Greek : psyche - soul, spirit - and deloun - to show, open.

Few visual cultures impregnated contemporary life as strongly as psychedelia did. Its promises of pleasure, spirituality, solidarity and sex invaded all forms of art and levels of culture. Unfortunately, psychedelia quickly fell into a cliché of excess : the stylization of freedom and nonconformity quickly hindered the imagination and fun that it was supposed to stimulate.

It seems rather pointless to insist on a «psychedelic art» in a strict and institutional way. This term encompasses a whole lifestyle. The counter-culture was quite indifferent to the notion of object as such, but rather aspired to an overall aesthetic and colourful day-to-day life. The artists of the 60’s were already avoiding the term of «psychedelic art», since it quickly became a magic word for sales. Its over-exposure and exaggerated use made it lose of its original meaning.

It is however important to avoid the amalgamation of psychedelia and drugs. These substances were, after all, yet another step in the search for an «over-consciousness». The sensory, the ephemeral, the notion of temporality were used by psychedelic artists as a way to re-invent and exceed reality. The process of creation thus becomes playful, both disembodied and materialistic, lucid and dreamlike : the refusal to fix the inconsistency of the world.

Psychedelic art is the explosion of our senses, the discovery of unsuspected ones, and, above all, an ode to life and existence. And it surrounds us. Let’s explore the uncanny.
